WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO LEAD IGNITE AT YOUR SCHOOL?
I joined IGNITE as an educator because they were creating meaningful opportunities and experiences for girls to explore the field of STEM – a field in which women are under-represented.
WHAT IMPACT HAS IGNITE HAD ON YOUR FEMALE STUDENTS?
IGNITE programs help to change the landscape of STEM for girls – building supports and access for them to begin imagining their future in STEM. For many, even if they were interested in STEM-related fields, they may not have known that it was a possibility for them to access those fields. IGNITE has helped to create a bridge for those students through their programs and mentorship from women in STEM.
ARE THERE ANY MEMORABLE STORIES OF HOW IGNITE HAS HAD AN IMPACT AT YOUR SCHOOL?
Recently I had the opportunity to take a group of 40 high school girls to Microsoft for a career exploration site visit. For some of the girls this was the first time that they had the opportunity to hear from women in technology and learn how to code. One student in particular came to the trip not knowing if computer science was something she could even do – she was intimidated by the idea but curious enough to still come on the trip. Being able to engage in coding activities and get support from Microsoft professionals who helped her walk through the coding activities was really empowering for her. She began to imagine and believe that she too could have a successful career in the technology field. She left the trip feeling excited and empowered.
