Donatha Gihana is the Country Director of Girl Effect Rwanda – an organization that is enabling Rwanda’s adolescent girls to fulfil their potential.
Prior to joining Girl Effect, Donatha was the National Coordinator of the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) Rwanda – where she championed girls’ education issues within Rwanda’s Ministry of Education. She initiated and led on the implementation of various girls’ education projects including; a 10 year MasterCard Funded Scholarship program and worked very extensively to ensure that a second FAWE Girls’ Secondary School is constructed in order to increase enrolment of girls at secondary school level. The schools are also aimed at increasing the number of girls in science, technology and mathematics fields.
Donatha has a deep passion for working with adolescent girls at community level. She is the founder of a grassroots based organization known as Young Women Empowered – Ngeruka Initiative, which is aimed at empowering rural girls to be agents of change.
In August 2016, Donatha won two awards; Country and Regional Winner | Africa’s Most Influential Women in Business and Government Awards in the category of Welfare and Civil Society.
She holds a MSc Gender, Culture & Development from the University of Rwanda and a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. She is looking forward to start a PhD soon.
