Galileo High School at Lumosity

On November 7th, Galileo Academy of Science and Technology students went on an IGNITE field trip to visit Lumosity. The visit included a tour of their office, a panel from some of the women working at Lumosity, and a workshop involving redesigning the classic Tetris game. The visit was a fantastic experience for the students as they learned what it was like to work at a company like Lumosity.

After a tour of the office, Lumosity hosts shared their stories of how they got to where they are now at Lumosity, including their experiences in high school, college, and their careers. Girls learned from the experiences shared by the panelists, especially the role that computer science and technology played in the preparation for their careers and its importance in their work now.

In the afternoon, the students worked with some of the Lumosity hosts to get a taste of what game development is like by redesigning the classic Tetris game. They came up with ideas to improve the experience of playing Tetris, either by adding an interesting theme or twist to it or changing the gameplay to make it more engaging for the player. The student had a lot of fun with this and got to show off some of their creativity.

Thank you to the wonderful hosts at Lumosity, especially our guide Laura Piersell, for sharing their day and their stories with the girls and making this a memorable experience for them. The students really enjoyed spending time at Lumosity and working with the hosts to brainstorm and share their game ideas. The stories shared in the panel and being in such a welcoming workplace have inspired all of the girls to be more interested in STEM.
