Shigeko Calos-Nakano
Chief Sealth Int HS, Class of 2012

My name is Shigeko Calos-Nakano, I graduated from Chief Sealth International High School in 2012 and am a proud IGNITE alumni. On the surface, it looks like IGNITE’s goal is to encourage these young women, to pursue a career in STEM because of the lack of women in the industry today. But if you look a little closer, the impact on these young women is much greater than that. You’ll find that these students are inspired to pursue whatever their passion is regardless of the barriers they think is in front of them, and discover that a career in STEM can help them accomplish that passion. Speaking out of experience, IGNITE not only connects students to resources to explore different fields and opportunities, but to other women with stories that proves a little bit of curiosity and a lot of guts to ask ‘why’ can make all the difference. Because of my experience with IGNITE, I proudly work for a software company in the healthcare industry. On behalf of all the alumni, thank you for supporting the endless work IGNITE strives to provide and expand for these young women.
