Aptos Middle School Coding Workshop

On Monday, March 11, 2019, a group of 32 sixth-grade girls had the wonderful opportunity to participate in a coding workshop where they learned the basics of coding which included creating shapes of different sizes, colors, and backgrounds!

The girls quickly got the hang of it and were sad when it was time to end. Many asked questions about how and where they can learn more!

Following the workshop, the girls had the opportunity to listen to our panel of three speakers. They were: Sabrina Settle, Ariella Grodzinsky, Software Engineers from 42 Silicon Valley  and Viktoria Shiring, Program Manager from the US Navy. Thank you to these amazing volunteers who shared their story with the girls. The girls were inspired to follow their dreams in becoming engineers, medical technologists, network engineers, and many more STEM careers, after listening to the amazing Ignite panel today. Thank you to Ariella for also leading the coding workshop and Oksana, Edaterina, Ben, Viktoria, and Sabrina for assisting during the coding workshop.

After attending this event:

97%

of girls/non-binary students are more interested in STEM

66%

of girls/non-binary students want to investigate taking a STEM course

83%

of girls/non-binary students want to study harder to attend college and further their education

Here’s what the students enjoyed most:

This event inspired me to strive for my dream.

I enjoyed learning how to make the shapes! It inspired me to hear that they majored in another subject before realizing their love for computer science.

Coding because it’s fun!

I loved coding and think it was a very good experience.

I liked experimenting with the colors and shapes and listening to the presentations and stories.

I really liked learning more about coding; I also liked experimenting on my own.

I liked when Viktoria talked about what she worked for and I never thought of a girl driving a Navy ship before!

I liked coding and experimenting on making different shapes, colors, and backgrounds. I enjoyed helping others to make new shapes.

I liked coding and when I got the hang of it and figured it out so I could make cool things.
