MacDonald-Miller Facility Solutions Field Trip with McKnight Middle School and Federal Way Public Academy

On December 10, 2025, students from McKnight Middle School and Federal Way Public Academy participated in an engaging field trip to MacDonald-Miller Facility Solutions, where they explored what STEM looks like in real-world industry settings. With support from volunteers Arthur Domby, Rogina Adams, Fatima Noble, Hazel Carpenter, Kaya Richardson, Leona Wade, and Tausha Sheff, students learned about the company, watched YouTube videos of the company, and took part in a creative activity designed to spark curiosity and confidence.

During the visit, students created vision boards to reflect their interests and goals, explored technology and equipment used at the facility — including questions about laser cutters and other machines — and participated in a Panelist discussion that encouraged open dialogue. Students asked thoughtful questions about career paths, the length of large projects, detailing work, and how professionals handle mistakes on the job. They were also curious about being the only woman in technical or college spaces and how to navigate those experiences.

Panelists shared honest and empowering advice, emphasizing that asking questions opens doors, trying new things builds confidence, and success does not require a single defined path or even a college degree. They encouraged students to explore classes, clubs, hobbies, and opportunities without fear, reinforcing that everyone deserves a seat at the table and that courage can change not only their own futures but those of other women who follow.

Educators noted that students were especially inspired by the energy and personal stories shared by the MacDonald-Miller team, and many connected strongly with the creative vision board activity. The event ran smoothly and created an environment where students felt comfortable engaging, asking questions, and imagining themselves in STEM careers.

Today inspired me to not doubt myself just because I’m a female. I can do things that typically guys do, I’m just as strong as them.”
