On April 29, 2025, IGNITE Students from Paschal Sherman Indian School explored the world of energy during an engaging Field Trip to the Chelan County Public Utility District (PUD). Students in grades 4 through 6 had the opportunity to dive into hands-on STEM learning and discover how hydroelectric power works.
Led by Bob Bauer, Education Outreach Coordinator, and Kristin Lodge, Visitor Services Manager, the day kicked off with an interactive classroom session on energy transfer. Students explored concepts like potential, kinetic, mechanical, and electrical energy through engaging bottle and magnet demonstrations. These hands-on activities helped bring complex science topics to life in an accessible and exciting way.
Next, students toured the multilevel Discovery Center, where they experimented with energy exhibits and asked questions to deepen their understanding. One highlight of the trip was the visit to the observation deck overlooking the powerhouse floor. From there, students observed the salmon fish ladder and learned how Chelan County PUD supports fish passage as part of their clean energy efforts.
Students asked thoughtful questions throughout the day, particularly about how the hands-on energy transfer activities worked. They also showed curiosity about careers at the PUD and learned that opportunities are opening up as more employees retire, sparking some early conversations about future job possibilities in renewable energy and public service.
The event provided students with a rare, behind-the-scenes glimpse into how electricity is generated, highlighting the importance of curiosity, innovation, and environmental stewardship in STEM careers.
