Stormwater Design Workshop with McInnis Engineering and ESM Consulting Engineers

On May 15, 2025, high school students in grades 9–12 from Todd Beamer High School participated in an engaging, hands-on IGNITE Workshop focused on stormwater drainage design. Hosted in partnership with McInnis Engineering and ESM Consulting Engineers, the session gave students a unique opportunity to learn about civil engineering through real-world applications and personal stories from industry professionals.

Volunteers Kallie Iverson from McInnis Engineering and Laura Bartenhagen from ESM Consulting Engineers kicked off the event with a presentation on civil engineering and projects they’ve worked on. They introduced students to an enviroscape model to visualize how pollutants travel through a watershed. Students helped “pollute” the model, sprinkling substances across the simulated landscape and watching as rainwater carried them into waterways. This hands-on component allowed students to understand the environmental impact of stormwater runoff and the importance of engineering in designing effective pollution control systems.

After the interactive demonstration, the session transitioned into an informal panel discussion. Students asked thoughtful questions about the engineering field, such as how to become a licensed professional engineer, salary expectations for entry-level positions, and how women can find support and mentorship in STEM careers. Panelists offered personal insights into their educational journeys, shared challenges they faced on the path to licensure, and emphasized the flexibility and value of an engineering degree. They encouraged students to explore STEM fields with confidence, stay resilient through obstacles, and seek out supportive communities and mentorship opportunities.

Educator Alicia Luke noted how valuable the real-world connection was for her students. The blend of practical learning with industry insight helped students not only grasp the role of engineering in addressing environmental issues but also see a future for themselves in civil engineering.

It inspired me because it showed me all the different ways we can achieve what we want in life. My favorite thing I learned today was about all the projects they’ve worked on. It was interesting to see how they worked on things we’ve seen or been to before.”

11th Grade IGNITE Student

I learned what an engineer’s day-to-day life might look like, which made it feel more comfortable. I also looked at designs—it was a little hard to understand, but it made me happy to see what a professional part looks like since I took an engineering class before. I liked learning about their education process, like how long it takes to get a license. I’m grateful they were so open about their experiences and lives in engineering.”

10th Grade IGNITE Student

It inspired me to be more open to options in STEM. I liked learning about runoff and how it pollutes the world.”

9th Grade IGNITE Student

It was inspiring to see how important these people’s jobs are and how beneficial they are for the planet. I liked learning how sewer water is cleaned to be used again.”

Additional Student Feedback:

“It really inspired me to learn how projects are planned and how they draw out the things they want to build. One of my favorite things I learned today was how buildings work and how the pungent sound works, along with other things.” – 12th Grade IGNITE Student
