IGNITE Panel at Foster High School

On March 19, 2026, students at Foster High School participated in an engaging in-person Women in STEM Panel that connected them with professionals across a wide range of technical careers. The session featured insights from Panelists Jessica Citrin, Sarah Potter, Nichole Schmitt, Lubia Urdaneta, and Srishti Gupta, with facilitation by Garen Freed.

Students were highly engaged throughout the event, asking thoughtful and honest questions about challenges the Panelists had faced, whether they had ever been encouraged to pursue different career paths, and what drew them to STEM. They were also curious about how to navigate adversity, what courses to take, and how to handle situations where others might not support their career interests. Additional questions touched on experiences with bias or being underestimated in the workplace.

Panelists responded with openness, sharing both personal and professional experiences. They emphasized the importance of finding a supportive community, seeking out mentors, and continuing to learn throughout one’s career. They encouraged students to believe in themselves, pursue their passions even when it feels intimidating, and recognize that there is space for everyone in STEM. Panelists also highlighted the value of getting involved beyond the classroom through clubs, hobbies, and hands-on experiences that align with students’ interests.

The conversation flowed naturally, allowing for meaningful dialogue and connection. Students remained attentive and engaged, creating a welcoming environment where honest discussions could take place. Overall, the event provided valuable insight into both the opportunities and realities of working in STEM, while leaving students with practical advice and encouragement for their own futures.
