Virtual Panel Series with Paschal Sherman Indian School

Join IGNITE to inspire girls and gender-diverse students in Kindergarten-10th grade at Paschal Sherman Indian School through a series of virtual panels!

IGNITE aims to increase gender diversity in high-wage/high-demand STEM fields, such as technology, skilled trades, and engineering. The school mainly serves students in the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation in Central Washington State. Women and gender-diverse professionals who represent Indigenous perspectives are highly encouraged to sign up as Panelists to share their stories and answer student questions!  

Volunteers should be comfortable speaking with both young children and teenagers (ages 5-15) in kid-friendly language.

This is an incredible opportunity to change an IGNITE Student’s life! After signing up as a panelist, new Panelists are required to complete our Panelist Training. Training must be completed by November 4.

During these three 30-min IGNITE virtual mini-panels, you will share your story and also show off 2 or more visual aids, such as wearing your work uniform or sharing a product or project you’ve worked on, so students can get a visual introduction to your job. See visual aid examples here. You will get a chance to answer students’ questions during the Q&A discussion. Here is the schedule

Setup: 8:00 – 8:30am

Grades K – 2: 8:30 – 9:00am

Grades 3 – 5: 9:15 – 9:45am

Grades 6 – 10: 10:00 – 10:30am

We are also looking for a Facilitator and Tech Host to moderate and provide technical support, respectively. The Facilitator and Tech Host will meet with our IGNITE organizer for a 1-hour scheduled training before your first event.

PLEASE NOTE: Since only 2 panelists are participating, we want to ensure students are exposed to a variety of opportunities in STEM. If your job is similar to another panelist who has already signed up, we may ask you to participate in the next event instead. If you can only attend 1 or 2 panels, please let us know.

Approximate time commitment:

New Volunteer: 3.25 hours: 0.75 hours prep (training, practicing, materials review) + 2.5-hour event

Returning Volunteer: 2.75 hours: 15 minutes prep + 2.5-hour event

The Lead Panelist will moderate the Panel by asking IGNITE-supplied prompt questions to fellow Panelists, maintain awareness of the allotted time for the session, and participate in the Panel with their own responses. Panelists who are comfortable moderating and/or have served as IGNITE Panelists in the past are encouraged to lead! Standard IGNITE panelist training is required (Coaching Session and our short Speaker Training for new Panelists).
