About IGNITE Worldwide
What is IGNITE and the IGNITE Program?
IGNITE stands for Inspiring Girls Now in Technology Evolution. IGNITE Worldwide is the answer to achieving gender equity in STEM. We work directly with educators during the school day to provide programming that promotes STEM education and career advancement for girls, young women, nonbinary, transgender, agender, and genderqueer youth from historically marginalized communities. Through hands-on events that connect students with role models who live and work in their communities, students recognize new possibilities for their futures.
We envision a world where every girl* has IGNITE Worldwide at her school. All girls* deserve equal access to STEM education during their school day, so they are aware of STEM opportunities and have the social and cultural capital to secure and thrive in a STEM career. IGNITE Worldwide promotes economic equality and workforce development by cultivating a diverse pipeline of talent and supporting a sustainable future for girls* and their families.
What type of Program Events does IGNITE offer?
The IGNITE Program consists of research-based event offerings, including field trips, work-based learning experiences, and panel presentations. Events are offered virtually or in-person, with many available for educators to schedule at a date and time of their choosing to accommodate unique school district needs and mitigate barriers to access.
Why is it called IGNITE Worldwide? Does IGNITE operate in other countries?
In 2006, IGNITE was chosen by the World Affairs Council and State Department to teach international leaders how to educate girls about technical careers in their countries. Since this time, IGNITE’s Founder, Cathi Rodgveller, has met with hundreds of leaders from around the world and helped them establish the program in their communities.
Since starting, IGNITE Worldwide has held numerous workshops with delegations of international leaders to discuss the importance of bringing young women into education and careers in STEM fields. Workshops go into depth about how to implement the IGNITE program in communities around the world. IGNITE Worldwide provides the program free of cost in efforts to inspire and empower girls around the world. To date, Cathi has shared the IGNITE Worldwide model and scalable curriculum to STEM and youth empowerment leaders from over 50 countries to implement in their own countries.

What is an on-demand event and how do I sign up?
For on-demand events, educators get to choose the date and time for a virtual or in-person Panel, a virtual Work-Based Learning Experience, or an in-person Workshop. For some educators, it is easier to schedule their own IGNITE events.
IGNITE Educators can sign up for on-demand events by using the Host an On-Demand Event Form. Here, you tell us your date and time preferences. If you’re scheduling a Work-Based Learning Experience or a Workshop, you can choose your first, second, and third choice topics.
On-Demand events are available virtually for all regions and in-person in regions specified on the form.
What is a pre-scheduled event and how do I sign up?
Pre-scheduled events are IGNITE Events where the company sets the date. The first educator to sign up may have an opportunity to request a preferred time for the event.
IGNITE Educators can sign up for a pre-scheduled event by browsing the Event Calendar on the IGNITE Teachers page.
Are IGNITE Events only for girls?
IGNITE policy is to keep these events for girls, transgender, agender, nonbinary, and genderqueer students because our mission is to increase gender equity in STEM. Girls don’t feel as comfortable sharing or asking questions when boys are in the room, and companies and volunteers who partner with us expect that only girls, transgender, agender, nonbinary, and genderqueer students will be attending, because they are focused on addressing the issue of gender representation in their workforce.
We are happy to share the best practices we’ve learned from our 25 years in operation for collaborating with fellow educators to set aside space and time for girls to explore these events!
While the IGNITE Program serves girls and gender-diverse students, we encourage individuals who identify as boys and men to join the greater IGNITE community as allies to gender equity in STEM.
Can students sign up for events on IGNITE's website?
Only educators can sign up for IGNITE Events. If you are a student, please let the IGNITE Educator at your school know that you are interested in this event. If you don’t have IGNITE at your school, please email contactus@ignite-worldwide.org to get started!
Do IGNITE Educators need to attend IGNITE Events with their students?
Yes. Educators are an essential part of the IGNITE Program! It is important that an IGNITE Educator is there to show students support and to be a continuing mentor at school when students have questions about STEM opportunities. At every event, educators have a chance to share information about STEM classes and clubs at school. Classes like Engineering and Computer Science and technical clubs are important for students to learn about while they are inspired with IGNITE!
Does IGNITE cost anything?
No–IGNITE is always free to educators and students. Your school or district are, however, responsible for transportation to field trips, though the host company provides lunch for these excursions.
What support does IGNITE Staff provide for educators?
IGNITE staff are here to help you every step of the way! Our focus is to make participation in our events – be it volunteer, educator, or student – as seamless as possible. We have a host of materials (scripts, training resources, guides, templates), and IGNITE staff are available at any point in the process to discuss questions or concerns via phone or Zoom.
We check in frequently to make sure you feel supported in everything from recruiting students to providing post-event feedback. IGNITE Worldwide values feedback from everyone who participates, and we are continually updating our program to reflect the suggestions of educators, students, and volunteers alike!
What are the main responsibilities of an IGNITE Educator?
As an IGNITE Educator, you are primarily responsible for recruiting girls, young women, nonbinary, agender, and genderqueer students from your school and/or district to participate in our events, and sharing opportunities for STEM clubs and classes at your school. Your specific role can vary from facilitating a panel of IGNITE volunteers (following an IGNITE-provided script and agenda), to participating alongside your students in Workshops and Field Trips! Above all, we want to empower you to energize students and other educators in your district to spread IGNITE’s mission of equalizing the gender balance in STEM careers.
Do my students need to be skilled in math and science to attend an IGNITE Program Event?
No – in fact, our mission is to reach students who may not have considered STEM as an option for various reasons. Rather than a class- or club-based program, it is ideally school-wide, and educators should consider students that could benefit the most from exposure to these fields. We aim to show students that STEM is for everyone!
I am a male educator - can I participate in IGNITE Events?
Absolutely! Educators, counselors, and chaperones of all genders are all encouraged to participate as IGNITE advocates in Program Events.

- If you have signed up for a panelist role at an IGNITE event, review our 11-minute Panelist Training Video once per school year and sign up for a live, interactive 1-hour Virtual Panelist Coaching Session if you have not attended one in the past. Coaching sessions are offered several times per month. The training and coaching is mandatory for panelists and provides important context, tips, and practice around how to best share information with students.
Panelists, Tech Hosts, Facilitators, and all company volunteers have access to IGNITE materials and staff to guide them through each event from start to finish. Each role requires slightly different preparation to your event goes smoothly and students—and volunteers!—all have a meaningful experience.
- Panelists: Review our brief Panelist Training Video once per school year and attend a one-time, hour-long Virtual Panelist Coaching Session before speaking on your first panel to practice your story and get feedback on how to make it engaging and relevant for students.
- Facilitator and Tech Host: Attend one virtual training session prior to your first IGNITE event.
As an IGNITE volunteer, we value your time and your willingness to share your story and/or talents in support of our IGNITE students. You determine how often you would like to participate and in what capacity. Event duration is listed for each volunteer opportunity on our website. For virtual events, a 30-minute pre-event meeting helps the Panelists, Facilitator and Tech Host(s) connect to establish the flow of the event.
Panelist Coaching Sessions are only for panelists who are currently signed up to be on an upcoming panel. All of these upcoming panelists, including past IGNITE panelists, must attend a live, interactive 1-hour Panelist Coaching Session if they have not attended an IGNITE panelist coaching session in the past. The Panelist Coaching Session is virtual and offered several times a month. The coaching provides important context, tips, and practice around how to best share information with students.
IGNITE panels are life-changing opportunities for girls and gender-diverse students to connect directly with STEM professionals they can relate to, to learn about their experiences. Panels take place at local schools, virtually or in-person, or as part of an IGNITE field trip or workshop.
At the beginning of the event, a panel facilitator (either the IGNITE teacher at the school or an IGNITE volunteer) will take few minutes to introduce students to the issue of the gender gap in STEM fields and why diverse perspectives are so important.
For the first half of the panel, each speaker will take about 3 minutes to tell their story. This includes their journey to a STEM career, obstacles overcome, and what their job is now. Please be sure to take our 11-minute training to prepare for this part of the panel.
The second half of the panel is a Q&A discussion with the students! They will ask some amazing questions, which often leads to deeper discussions about gender equity in STEM.
Panels take place during the academic year (August to June) during the school day.
Panels are held at middle and high schools with IGNITE chapters, either virtually or in person at schools in the Puget Sound (WA), Bay Area (CA) or DC Metro Area. Panels may also be part of a company field trip, workshop, or virtual work-based learning experience.
Feel free to wear whatever you normally would! Casual or business is fine.
When you sign up for a panel, you will be connected with other volunteers through a calendar invite (let us know when you sign up if you would prefer not to have your information shared publicly). We highly encourage volunteers for virtual events to get together for a run-through prior to the event. A few days in advance of an in-person panel, the IGNITE teacher or an IGNITE staff member will contact all speakers with detailed arrival instructions and reminders. Panelists often find it helpful to connect before events and for professional networking, so feel free to reach out to one another!
Each panelist will need to incorporate 1-2 physical visual aids for both in-person and virtual panels to help students get to know you and your job!
For in-person events, if you plan on needing access to a projector display, please let IGNITE know in advance so we can communicate this with the IGNITE teacher.
It is great that you found your place in STEM despite following a nontraditional path! However, it is increasingly more competitive and difficult to do this (and to move around once you have a career). If you were a teenager today, what advice would you give yourself about preparing for a future STEM career? We want to encourage students to develop technical skills now. For example, a 2-year STEM degree could make an incredible difference in creating an attainable future!
For grades 8 and under, it is best to focus on the girls’ immediate futures. What classes would you suggest they take in high school? What other activities can they be involved in to help sharpen their technical skills? Even more general advice to try new things and not let others’ tell you ‘no’ can be very impactful!
