On June 3, 2025, 7th-grade students at Sacajawea Middle School participated in an engaging IGNITE Women in STEM Panel designed to inspire and inform the next generation of innovators. The event featured four professionals from diverse sectors of the tech and engineering fields. Laura Bartenhagen, Director of Engineering at ESM Consulting Engineers, LLC, served as the Lead Panelist, alongside Veslava Ovendale, a Senior UX Researcher at T-Mobile, Kashaf Jamshed, a Data Scientist, and Patty Velasquez, an IT Senior Systems Analyst at Seattle Children’s Hospital.
Throughout the event, each speaker shared their educational background, career journey, and current role, giving students a real-world look into life in STEM. Panelists emphasized the importance of taking STEM-related classes, seeking out scholarships, and remaining persistent in the face of obstacles. Students asked insightful questions such as how the Panelists paid for their education, what their daily responsibilities entail, and whether they would return to speak again in the future. One student even asked what the panelists might have become had they not pursued their current paths.
The Panelists encouraged students to explore both community colleges and universities for tech education, noting the availability of career fairs and scholarship programs. They highlighted the strong earning potential and satisfaction that STEM careers can offer, especially for those willing to work hard and stay curious.
