IGNITE Field Trip to Oracle with Eckstein Middle School

On Tuesday, October 21, thirty students from Eckstein Middle School spent the day at Oracle for an exciting IGNITE field trip filled with workshops, hands-on learning, and an inspiring Women in STEM panel. Students were welcomed by a large team of Oracle volunteers including Adedamola Adebayo, Akshaya Arora, Anusha Gururaja Manur, Ash Setlur, Ashley Edsall, Cara Kleid, Daniyal Zulfiqar, Elizabeth Castillo, Gabrielle Genevich, Jessica Bradley, Kayla Jeter, Keith McDermott, Kelly Cheng, Leslie Fowler, Marie Sorell, Megan Snyder, Natascha Kempfe, Padmaja Kolle, Rahul Motan, Rakesh Joshi, Raven Robertson, Rohith Kumar Veligeti, Sarah Nassery, Shivani Thakkar, Tricia Fisk, and Yashashvi Dave. They received swag bags and were organized into small groups that rotated through four engaging workshops led by Cara Kleid, Ashley Edsall, Kayla Jeter, and Natascha Kempfe. Each workshop leader shared her career journey and guided students through an interactive activity tied to her field, allowing students to explore UX design, game theory, debugging, and the importance of soft skills in STEM.

After the workshops, students enjoyed lunch and gathered for a panel moderated by Shivani Thakkar. Panelists Leslie Fowler, Akshaya Arora, Elizabeth Castillo, and Gabrielle Genevich shared personal stories and experiences, giving students insight into the different paths that can lead to careers in technology. Students were eager to learn and asked thoughtful questions including how the Panelists knew what career they wanted before college, what steps they could take now to learn more about STEM, what classes to focus on, how old you need to be to work in tech, and what entry-level salaries look like. They also asked how many women work at Oracle and how the Panelists knew their careers were the right fit.

Panelists shared several key pieces of advice, encouraging students to ask questions, become subject matter experts, and eventually mentor others. They emphasized that career paths often change unexpectedly and that it is okay to study one thing and end up doing something completely different. Students were encouraged to take risks, try things that scare them, and embrace challenges because these are the experiences that lead to growth. Panelists also highlighted the importance of supporting peers, expressing empathy, and building strong relationships at work. They urged students to speak up, participate, and make themselves visible so they are not overlooked for opportunities, promotions, or growth.

“I felt inspired today at Oracle when seeing these workspaces where so much is done and learned thanks to technology. And by listening to all these women at the company who want us all to be in these same professions someday.

This event helped me feel confident in choosing STEM career for my future career. This event made me feel surprised that women who work in STEM fields are working hard to bring in more women to join STEM field.”

“It was interesting to see how many options there are even in one field or workplace. I now want to learn a lot more about specific career options like these.

My big takeaways are how important it is to have women in the field. Having less than 20% makes it hard to inspire the next generation.”

8th Grade IGNITE Student

We got to see how different STEM fields worked which inspired me to look more into STEM. We also learned how we can start pursuing STEM if that is the path we want. Finally, we learned how we can use skills in STEM in life.”

Additional Student Feedback:

“This event showed me that it is ok to want to go into fields that are male-dominated and that so many women succeed and are really fulfilled. That is inspiring to me and lots of other people too.“ – 8th Grade IGNITE Student

“These events helped me realize that getting a job doesn’t have to be very straightforward, and life can take a twisty path. What I do in college doesn’t have to dictate what I do later in life!” – 8th Grade IGNITE Student

“It doesn’t matter what path you take or what school you went to, you can still do great and big things in STEM. Thank you everyone who works here and who volunteered to teach us and educate us about technology.” – 8th Grade IGNITE Student

“That now I know there others ways to get code in different databases and that there is more STEM classes for me to take. Thank you so much for giving us this chance.” – 8th Grade IGNITE Student

“A big takeaway for me was when the panelist was talking about confidence in asking questions. It was really helpful to think ahead with asking questions.” – 8th Grade IGNITE Student

“One of the more important things is to be curious and ask questions. There are a lot of different career paths that can get you a job in STEM, not just one predetermined one.” – 8th Grade IGNITE Student
