Why Investing in Girls and Gender-Diverse Students in STEM Matters Now More Than Ever

At IGNITE Worldwide, we believe that equitable access to STEM education is not just a moral commitment—it is essential to building a competitive, innovative future. Recently, Program Director Amber Zertuche shared a compelling message with Washington policymakers about why this work is urgent, and today we are sharing that message with the broader IGNITE community.

Amber’s journey began in the highly specialized world of Metrology Engineering, where she helped fabricate and test optical components for the James Webb Space Telescope—a project that will shape scientific discovery for generations. Yet alongside these remarkable accomplishments, she repeatedly encountered a discouraging reality. As she wrote in her letter, “every day, my professional triumph was tempered by a stark reality: I was consistently the only woman on my team.” That pattern, she explained, wasn’t a coincidence. It was proof that despite enormous talent among girls and gender-diverse students, the path into high-demand STEM careers remains obstructed by systemic inequities.

Recognizing the need for change, Amber transitioned from industry to the classroom, teaching Physics and Engineering to high school juniors and seniors. It was in that environment that she first witnessed how quickly those inequities can be confronted with intentional support. After she launched an IGNITE Worldwide Chapter at her school, students who had once dismissed STEM began to see themselves differently. They enrolled in advanced courses, pursued competitive internships, and even advocated successfully for new Computer Science offerings. Amber saw firsthand that when students meet relatable role models and have a clear line of sight into STEM careers, their confidence grows and the barriers they once felt begin to fall away.

Today, Amber leads IGNITE Worldwide’s efforts to bring these life-changing experiences to students across the country. IGNITE is more than a program—it fills a structural gap by connecting girls and gender-diverse students with women STEM professionals, immersive learning opportunities, and environments where they feel seen and capable. By intervening during the most pivotal school years, when societal messages about who “belongs” in technical fields start to stick, IGNITE interrupts limiting narratives and replaces them with possibility.

Demand for programs like IGNITE is growing nationally, particularly in communities where access to industry exposure and STEM enrichment has historically been limited. Schools, educators, and families are seeking approaches that don’t just spark interest but sustain it, helping students envision themselves in fields that are shaping the world’s future.

Amber’s call to policymakers captures the stakes: “By funding IGNITE Worldwide, you are investing directly in the economic engine of our future, cultivating a competitive, inclusive, and innovative workforce, and ensuring that every young person has the opportunity to contribute to the next generation of solutions—whether they are building the next space telescope or developing life-saving technologies.”

The challenge is clear, and so is the opportunity. Talent is everywhere, but without access and representation, too many students are left behind. By investing in programs like IGNITE that break down stereotypes, provide meaningful exposure, and build confidence at critical developmental moments, we can ensure that future STEM fields reflect the full breadth of human creativity and potential.

IGNITE Worldwide stands ready to expand this work, deepen our reach, and collaborate with leaders and partners nationwide to ensure every girl and gender-diverse student can see themselves in STEM—and has the chance to pursue a future that once felt out of reach.
