IGNITE Field Trip to Pitchbook with Woodmont K-8 and Broadview-Thomson K-8

On November 20, students from Woodmont K-8 and Broadview-Thomson K-8 visited PitchBook for an inspiring and activity-filled IGNITE field trip. Educators Azeb Hagos, Patti Ibara, Charissa Eggleston, Karen Byeman, and Susie Pruit supported students throughout the visit. The event was made possible thanks to an exceptional team of PitchBook volunteers, including Ali Kearney, Amy Nezamzadeh, Anna Butler, Annemarie Donegan, Ariel Vargas, Baily Green, Bethany Lindsay, Bianca Liebhaber, Calista Valente, Chinyere McKenzie, Chloe Ladwig, Christina Nofziger, Cindy Weaver, Dhana Chinta, Erin Haber, Jen Stewart, Jessie Triemstra, Kaitlyn Tsai, Kateryna Tymofeieva, Katy Iza, Kelsey Merriman, Laura Chance, Laura Ruiz, Lauren Miller, Margaret Rauch, Marlin deCamp, Michelle Barron, Rachel Padgett, Samantha Montano, Sarah Anderegg, Sarah Tannahill, Stacey Jenkins, and Suzy Le Bel.

Students began the day with a company overview to understand PitchBook’s mission and work. They then explored the multi-story office in a guided tour where employees on each floor shared their roles, explained daily responsibilities, and answered questions. Students were able to view collaborative workspaces, technology hubs, and employee celebration boards highlighting accomplishments, client wins, and problem-solving successes. They especially enjoyed the opportunity to experience the “feel” of a modern tech workplace and picture themselves in such an environment. Snacks, games, and interactive elements added excitement and comfort throughout the visit.

A major highlight was the hands-on small-group project where students invented their own company, created a product, designed a logo and marketing campaign, and prepared a pitch to present to the larger group. Volunteers supported them through the creative process, encouraging teamwork, confidence, and imaginative thinking. Students impressed everyone with their bold ideas and enthusiastic presentations.

During both the tour and the panel discussion, students asked thoughtful questions. They were curious about employees’ backgrounds, what classes or clubs had been important during middle school, how people chose to work at PitchBook, and how much the office technology cost. They also asked about internships, diversity, pathways into tech, managing fear around public speaking, and what advice panelists would give to their younger selves.

Panelists shared powerful messages that resonated deeply with students. They emphasized taking chances on yourself, choosing the hardest challenge and scaling down if needed, and not waiting to pursue goals since time passes regardless. They encouraged students to ask for what they want, showcase their strengths proudly, and resist the pressure many women feel to minimize their accomplishments. The panelists also described the importance of vulnerability, asking for help, embracing new experiences, and confidently navigating spaces where they may be underestimated.

Students left the event inspired by the vibrant environment at PitchBook, the diverse women leaders they met, and the strong encouragement to dream boldly, take risks, and step into opportunities – even when they feel intimidating. The combination of hands-on creativity, networking, career exploration, and open conversations made this field trip both memorable and incredibly empowering for all attendees.

“My favorite part was being able to talk and ask questions without being judged.”

It inspired me because it showed me all of these choices and how cool STEM was. I just feel so inspired by them, like at the end they told us about themselves and I was like wow I want to be confident like her or I want to be wise as her. I’m so grateful for you guys, cause I feel a bit confident in myself, thank you.”
