International IGNITE Panel Event in Poland

On November 20th, students from the Jan Paweł II Primary School in Mochowo met with the Mentor, Paulina Lewandowska MSc Eng. From an early age, Paulina was far more fascinated by hammers than by dolls. Instead of playing house, she preferred to build one—out of planks, crates or branches. Her passion quickly turned into a clear educational and professional path: construction technical school, on-site construction work, and part-time studies at the Warsaw University of Technology in Płock.

Although the beginning of her career was not always easy and women’s presence on construction sites can still raise eyebrows, Paulina emphasises that competence has no gender. During the meeting, Paulina explained to the students what the construction process consists of, what lies beneath and above the floor, and why—according to her—“construction is female”. She introduced the girls to the practical aspects of working as a construction engineer, highlighting that the profession requires courage, adaptability and a willingness to challenge stereotypes, which is exactly why many women thrive in this field.

Throughout the session, the students learned about the realities of working on a construction site: everyday challenges, the need for quick decision-making, as well as the deep satisfaction that comes from creating something lasting and meaningful. Paulina shared her personal experiences with overcoming stereotypes and building self-confidence in a male-dominated environment.

After the meeting, 100% of students reported an increased awareness of career opportunities in technical fields.

Many of them (90%) said that talking to the mentor boosted their confidence and motivation to pursue interests in STEM.

It is also worth highlighting that our Mentor met with the students at the very school she once attended herself, which may serve as an additional factor helping the girls identify with their role model.

Special thanks to our Mentor Paulina Lewandowska and to the Directorate and Teachers from the Jan Paweł II Primary School in Mochowo and Budimex for their support of the IGNITE Program.
