IGNITE Virtual Women in Engineering Panel with Homestead and Eastmont High Schools

Students from Homestead High School and Eastmont High School joined IGNITE Worldwide for a Women in Engineering Virtual Mini-Panel featuring volunteers from Re:Build Manufacturing and Disney Streaming. Molly McLaughlin, Director of Program Management at Re:Build Manufacturing, and Maitri Chattopadhyay, Engineering Manager at Disney Streaming, led the conversation, with support from Facilitator Val Olague and Tech Host Fethiye Starmach. The event gave 30 students a chance to hear directly from engineers working in the field and to ask questions in an informal, student-driven format.

The Panelists walked students through their career journeys, the projects they’ve enjoyed, and what engineering school was really like. Students took full advantage of the chat-based Q&A, lining up to ask about everything from paying for college to whether a master’s degree is worth it—especially for fields like chemical engineering. They also asked what the Panelists were like in high school, how they balance demanding jobs with family life, and how to choose a college without getting caught up in rankings. Educators shared that this honesty made a big impact, especially for students who are still shaping their own ideas about STEM. One student connected deeply with a Panelist’s story about immigrating to the U.S. as a teenager, while another—who has long dreamed of becoming a mechanical engineer—was thrilled to hear real stories from women in the field.

The Panelists emphasized that engineering is challenging but rewarding, that careers often evolve, and that support systems, work–life balance, and asking for help matter just as much as technical skill. With candid advice and relatable stories, the session gave students a clearer picture of what an engineering path actually looks like—and helped them imagine how they might find their own place in it.

I felt inspired because the women in STEM gave a lot of reassurance about how everything worked out for them, even though they did not start off perfectly. They also talked a lot about how we should focus on what inspires us, rather than pay, which I think is a really important perspective.”

My favorite thing I learned was about how to navigate changing a career path. I found that the panelists were very helpful and thoughtful with their answers.”

It made me realize that the careers that I want to strive towards are actually in STEM! I want to go into the medical field, but I wasn’t aware that it was STEM.”

It was inspirational because the panelists emphasized the importance of having people of different ethnicities and genders in the STEM industry. I was also inspired by where they worked.”

Additional Student Feedback:

“My favorite thing that I learned was about how these women created a career for themselves, starting back in high school. It gave me a lot of inspiration and motivation.” – 11th Grade IGNITE Student

“I was reminded that it is possible to go into stem. especially if you’re aware what challenges there might be.” – 11th Grade IGNITE Student

“Today’s event helped me realize not knowing what I want to do is okay. As long as I keep exploring and learning, I’ll find what I want to do. I liked learning about a Disney software job. It helps me appreciate the work put in on the Disney graphics.” – 10th Grade IGNITE Student

“Today’s event inspired me because I now know that I don’t need to be a perfect student to be successful in my future.” – 12th Grade IGNITE Student

“I learned that switching from entirely different majors is doable and that people don’t really know what they want to do when they first come into college. The volunteers also had cool jobs. I didn’t know that all Disney employees had free access to the parks.” – 11th Grade IGNITE Student
